The Ethics of Decentralized Clinical Trials and Informed Consent: Taking Technologies’ Soft Impacts into Account.Tessa I. van Rijssel, Ghislaine J. M. W. van Thiel & Johannes J. M. van Delden - forthcoming - Health Care Analysis:1-12.
Decentralized clinical trials (DCTs) have the potential to advance the conduct of clinical trials, but raise several ethical issues, including obtaining valid informed consent. The debate on the ethical issues resulting from digitalization is predominantly focused on direct risks relating to for example data protection, safety, and data quality. We submit however, that a broader view on ethical aspects of DCTs is needed to touch upon the new challenges that come with the DCT practice. Digitalization has impacts that go beyond (...)

    Full Moon and Marriage in Apollonius' Argonautica.J. M. Bremer - 1987 - Classical Quarterly 37 (02):423-.
There are two passages in which the poet introduces a full moon to accentuate a particular aspect of a scene in his narrative; 1.1228–33 and 4.166–71. I shall concentrate on the second. Commentators have contributed various suggestions but failed to understand the specific erotic-nuptial connotation of the full moon. The same applies to the more specialized contributions of Drogemiiller and Rose. I shall first present the evidence for the nuptial associations of the full moon, then apply this idea to the (...)

The church as a moral agent: In dialogue with Bram van de Beek.J. M. Vorster - 2018 - HTS Theological Studies 74 (4):1-8.
The latter part of the 20th century is known for a surge in the so-called ‘genitive theologies’. Usually, a genitive theology has an ulterior motive, aiming at the transformation of a society or the promotion of sound politics and economy. In recent years, this trend culminated in public theology. The issue of religion with an ulterior motive was raised by Van de Beek in a seminal article focusing on theology without gaining anything from it as an answer to the surging (...)

    An Early Dispute About Right Reason.J. M. Rist - 1983 - The Monist 66 (1):39-48.
‘Right reason’. The English words render, somehow or other, the Greek orthos logos, the Latin recta ratio. Not that ratio does much justice to the Greek logos. It limits its scope, or at least would do so if it were not employed in a special “Greek” manner by philosophical users. Indeed all three phrases, Greek, Latin and English are in the nature of counters; none has an obvious and unambiguous sense. There seems to have been a long-standing argument, or at (...)

    The Concept of the Free Society.J. M. Bocheński - 1986 - The Monist 69 (2):207-215.
The aim of the present paper is to present a logical analysis of the concept of the free society. The symbolism used will be that of the Principia Mathematica—a few extra-logical symbols being explained when introduced. Regarding logical symbolism, it must be stressed, that the use of artificial symbols is not to be understood as a formalization. For formalization is a procedure by which one abstracts from the meaning of terms and operates on the shapes of the symbols alone—which will (...)

Ctesias, his royal patrons and Indian swords.J. M. Bigwood - 1995 - Journal of Hellenic Studies 115:135-140.
Like his predecessor Herodotus, Ctesias has a great deal to report of marvellous springs, lakes and other bodies of water. Indeed, in one of the most noteworthy tales in his book on India, he describes a remarkable well which produces not water but gold. The story has never been discussed in full. A recent scholar, in fact, in one of the few allusions to it, reproduces the account, but only in part, namely the lines which concern the gold. The original (...)

    Ctesias' Parrot.J. M. Bigwood - 1993 - Classical Quarterly 43 (01):321-.
Tall tales abound in Ctesias' Indica, as scholars have not hesitated to emphasize, heaping ridicule on the author's enthusiasm for the fantastic and on his apparent lack of regard for the truth. However, by no means everything in the work is absurd or wrong, and marvels too are no surprise. After all, as a resident of the Persian court for a number of years at the end of the fifth century B.C., Ctesias had seen items from India which would have (...)

Women in the Military: Scholastic Arguments and Medieval Images of Female Warriors.J. M. Blythe - 2001 - History of Political Thought 22 (2):242-269.
In their political treatises, the scholastic writers Ptolemy of Lucca and Giles of Rome discussed the question of whether women should serve in the military. The dispute came in response to Aristotle, who reported in his Politics that Plato and Socrates taught that women should receive the same military training as men and take an equal part in fighting. Such a treatment was made possible by a medieval context in which women under certain circumstances could be feudal lords responsible for (...)
